The Adminstrative Unit (AU) of Ishem is part of the Municipality of Durres, which includes 10 villages (Kuraten Shkafane, Lalez, Likmetaj, Kertushaj, Kapidanaj, Gjuricaj, Rrotull, Draç, Bize and Shetaj). The area is located in the north-western part of the Municipality and it considerably lies close to seashore, where in the recent years has been under radical changes, giving an urban dimension to the area of Shkafana and the beach in Lalez’s bay.

ADF with the reconstruction of the touristic segment Shkafane-Lalez-Ishem intends to have an impact on movement of vehicles and ensure security for the entire area. The segment improves access to the Lalzi Bay, which it leads to Bubq as well as it connects the area with northern part, where visitors from Kosovo can travel through the axis, thus facilitating movement and reducing traffic. Moreover, Ishem road might be used form the southern area, reducing traffic congestion during the tourist season.

“The investment is realized by the Albanian Development Fund and the axis is 8 km long, starting from the entrance of the main street to its exit. It connects Shkafana with Lalzi and Lalzi with Ishem, AU Ishem. The main aim of the investment is not only to directly serve 4500 inhabitants and 5 villages but also travellers coming from Fushe-Kruja, Kruja as well as tourists (from Kosovo) who frequent Lalez bay can cross through it”, highlights the major of Durres Mrs. Emiriana Sako along a site visit; furthermore, it should be added that there are living 8,858 inhabitants in the area.

Along this touristic axis, the landscape is panoramic but also it has considerable opportunities for the development of profitable activities in the field of agrotourism and beyond it, thus improving quality of life and living standards. Beside the improvement of the infrastructure, the monument of cultural heritage Ishem Castel becomes more tangible, creating opportunity for tourists to explore cultural tourism.
