Kukës, 26 September 2012

14 thousand inhabitants from the Communes of Zapod, Topojan and Shishtavec in Kukës District benefit from the ADF investments via the construction of the road section from Kukës to Shishtavec and the construction of four water supply schemes in the villages of Borje, Shtrezë, Oreshkë and Novosej.

Through a combined intervention, ADF is contributing to the improvement of living conditions for the inhabitants of three Communes in the District of Kukës. The construction of the road section from Kukës to Shishtavec, together with the construction of 4 water supply schemes in the villages of Borje, Shtrezë, Oreshkë and Novosej gets this area out of isolation by providing real development opportunities.

Opened for the first time in 1978, the road section from Kukës to Shishtavec remains the only connecting road with the national highway and the city of Kukës for the 19 villages of Zapod, Topojan and Shishtavec Communes. Since its construction 34 years ago, no serious investments have been undertaken on this road, leaving it in a miserable condition. The inhabitants of these areas could not fulfill their everyday needs for transport, medical emergencies, transport of agricultural and livestock products to the nearest market etc.

The second lot of the road, 6 km long, is an investment of the Albanian Development Fund and connects 19 villages of the above mentioned Communes not only to the city of  Kukës but to Kosovo and “Rruga e Kombit” (Highway of the Nation). The construction of this road section is financed by Albanian Government and Islamic Development Bank.

The road has been in a deteriorated condition, thus hindering the normal transport of people and goods. It used to be a single carriageway all along its length, in a very poor condition and impassable for small vehicles, isolating the inhabitants for several months during winter season.

This road has a lane width of 6.5 meters with roadside verges of 0.75 meters. It is equipped with all the necessary elements of infrastructure including, roads signs, road culverts, works of art, bridges and newly constructed retaining walls.

Mr. Benet Beci, the ADF Executive Director, during his on-site visit to observe the progress of civil works at asphalt paving phase, talking with the journalists present on the site, among other things, said that:

"The road section that we are visiting today is part of a combined intervention that ADF has undertaken in the rural Communes of Zapod, Topojan and Shishtavec. The investments for the construction of the road and four water supply schemes in the villages of Borje, Shtrezë, Oreshkë and Novosej will open up new perspectives for the development of agriculture, livestock farming and tourism. Upon completion of the road, the inhabitants will need only 30 minutes to reach health care centers, educational services and other social facilities in the city of Kukës.”

The construction of the new road will get the inhabitants out of isolation once and for all, by providing new opportunities for the social and economic development of the area. The beautiful landscape of Shishtaveci Alps with its healthy climate, and the possibility of practicing winter sports, will be accessible to all visitors who would like to visit the area. The construction of this road will increase the possibilities of communication with the Commune of Dragash in Kosovo via the border point of Shishtaveci. The civil works for the construction of the last lot of the road section from “Ura e Zapodit” to “Shishtavec” at a length of 15 km are expected to be procured in the course of the year.
