May 11th, 2009 - Works continue at some of the sub-projects of the "Rehabilitation of the Secondary and Local Roads" Program financed by World Bank

"The Rehabilitation of the Secondary and Local Roads" is a program of the Albanian Government which aims at the improvement of the access to the basic services and the increase of the potentials for the economic, agricultural and tourist development in the rural areas. The project foresees direct investments in the rehabilitation of about 1500 km of regional and communal roads throughout Albania. The project outcomes will result in:

a) Proportional reduction in the vehicle travel time;

b) Improved access to health and educational facilities as well as better access to the regional markets;

c) Proportional increase in traffic volume on project roads after the project completion;

d) Proportional change in the perception of the road users regarding the quality of project roads.

Since the onset of the project in December 2007, it has been worked intensively on the selection of the road sections to be reconstructed, on the accomplishment of the projects concerning the first 400 km; all these activities have resulted in the implementation of the first 108 km of road. Currently, 9 road sections of about 108 km in length are under the process of the project implementation and 11 other projects are under the contraction or procurement process.

Some of these active projects are:

1 - Reconstrucion of "Ura e Farkes- Qender Fshat" project, Tirana Region

Reconstruction of "Ura e Farkes-Qender Fshat Road" project foresees the reconstruction and asphalting of the existing road at a length of 6.5km by 7 ml wide. This is a secondary regional road which links the Commune of Baldushk with the national road of Tirane-Elbasan. This road will also connect the villages of Petrele and Vaqarr Commune to Tirana city. About 6100 beneficiaries will profit from the reconstruction of this road. "Ura e Farkes-Qender Fshat" road will increase the access of the agricultural products to the market of Tirana.It will also serve as a major link between the communities in the Region of Elbasan and those of Tirana Region.

2 - Reconstruction of "Kuben-Perroi i Kapsit Road" project , Diber Region

The Reconstruction of "Kuben-Perroi i Kapsit Road" project foresees the reconstruction and asphalting of the existing road at a length of 9,8 km by 6 ml wide. The road will improve the communication of 12,200 inhabitants representing 4 villages in Cidhen Commune with 7500 inhabitants representing 6 villages of Kastriot Commune. This project is going to improve the road connection between Dibra Region and Kukes.

3 - Reconstruction of "Fier-Strume Road" project, Fier Region

The reconstruction of "Fier-Strume Road" project comprises the reconstruction and asphalting of this section at a length of 12, 6 km by 4ml wide. This section is a local road used by the communities of Strume and Kuman as well as by Roskovec Municipality. 10,000 inhabitants living in this area will benefit from this project by having a better access to the basic community services and a better transport of agricultural outputs to the city of Fier.

4 - Reconstruction of the road "Domaj-Ura e Lapajve" project, Kukes Region

Reconstruction of "Domaj-Ura e Lapajve Road" project comprises the reconstruction and asphalting of a road section at a length of 11.5 km by 6 m wide. This project is going to improve the road connection between the Communes of Bushtrice, Ujmishte, Gryke Caje and Kalise. There are about 3,500 inhabitants who are direct beneficiaries of this project. At the same time, this road will improve the connection between two Regions; that of Dibra and Kukes.

Also in April 2009, the works have started for 5 other sub-projects which are “Rehabilitation of Lezhe-Kallmet Road, Reconstruction of Xarre-Fshati Pllake Road in Saranda, Lapidari-Korite Road Asphalting in Korça and Belsh-Fierze Road Asphalting in Elbasan and Reconstrucion of the road Vau I Dejes- Nenshat in Shkodra region.
